Merit Award at NBQSA for Fuel Management Information System - 2010
10/4/2010
In 2009, it was a compulsory requirement by the Airline to monitor its Aviation fuel consumption as the oil prices were skyrocketing. Also due to the financial difficulties that the Airline faced during the time, it compelled the airline to look for solutions internally, rather than spending resources to obtain third party solutions.
At this stage, the Airline entrusted its IT department to develop an internal solution FMIS, which subsequently saved approximately USD 200,000/= for the Airline. SriLankan Airlines’ IT development team developed a software with the guidance of Flight Operations-Aviation Fuel section to monitor its fuel consumption, efficiency, which captures fuel data and takes corrective action in case of excess fuel burn.
This is a totally in-house built system which collate information from various internal systems. The key feature of the FMIS system is that it is links with live systems in the Company, such as Flight Planning, Crew Management and Fleet Movements. Further, in recognition of the Quality of the application, the FMIS won a Merit award at National Best Quality Software Awards conducted by British Computer Society (BCS) in 2010 for In-house Application category.
