SriLankan Airlines marked year of transformation in its recently ended financial year, carrying the highest number of passengers ever in the airline’s history. Based on draft un-audited accounts, the total operational revenue increased to LKR136.68 billion from LKR129.48 billion in the prior year. However, difficult market conditions resulted the airline to record an un-audited Net group loss (before finance and one-off charges) of LKR6.49 billion (USD15.12 million) for the year. This is an increase from the LKR2.90 billion (USD3.15 million) loss recorded in the prior year – but a significant improvement from the deficit that had been budgeted for the year. The year was profoundly challenging for airlines worldwide, with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimating an 8% global decline in air fares in USD terms. Despite these challenging conditions, SriLankan managed to control the decline in its average fares to only 3% in USD terms year-over-year – a satisfactory performance in relation to many leading airlines in the world who have seen significantly higher fare declines.

SriLankan Airlines, which has been widely recognized for many years as a pioneer of environmental conservation in the global airline industry, has achieved the distinction of becoming one of only six airlines worldwide to obtain the prestigious Quality Assurance Standard (QAS) accreditation for its Voluntary Carbon Offset Programme, ‘Flygreen’.

Hundreds of employees of SriLankan Airlines gathered at the company’s annual Sports Day at the St. Joseph’s College ground on 10th January to demonstrate their sporting prowess, teamwork and harmony.

SriLankan Airlines, the first Asian airline to operate the four-engine Airbus A340 aircraft, will bid goodbye to the last of its A340s after more than two decades in service, with a final commercial flight today, (January 7, 2016)

The SriLankan Aviation College celebrated its first anniversary recently at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, completing a year of impressive achievements and success in airline and travel education.

This year promises to be an interesting one for world aviation. Fuel prices are near historic lows and global demand remains strong. SriLankan Airlines, similar to international carriers world over, has had to respond to this highly competitive market environment by re-evaluating its current operations and re-deploying capacity to more sustainable routes and destinations.
